Critical Thinking for EMT's

Emergency Medicine

The ReelDx Paramedic Series is designed to enhance the critical thinking skills of the practicing paramedic by developing an organized approach to a given patient, analyzing the HPI for possible differential diagnosis and finally compare/contrast with previous knowledge to determine the most appropriate treatment.

Description

Each course is designed around a specific patient complaint, incorporating several different patient cases within each complaint.  An initial HPI, in the patient’s own words, is presented.  After analyzing that information along with VS, the most probable differential diagnosis is determined followed by the most appropriate assessments that will confirm or lessen the probability of those choices or contribute to the development of new differentials.  Sound medical reasoning is enhanced by asking the participant to consider various aspects of additional information that is provided, including asking about the significance of the findings, influence on differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment choices.

Learning objectives

  • Develop an understanding of the significance of information shared in a patient’s HIPI.
  • Enhance the ability to accurately analyze a given patient’s HPI for the most probable field diagnosis.
  • Based on the most probable field diagnosis, consider which specific assessments will provide critical information to narrow the field diagnosis.
  • Integrate additional information with previous knowledge of pathophysiology, and pharmacology to determine the most appropriate therapeutic interventions for each patient.
